CouchWarriors Expands Further Nationally with South Australia and New South Wales

CouchWarriors Expands Further Nationally with South Australia and New South Wales

After successful growth from Victoria into Queensland, Fighting Game Esports Events organisation brings in Adelaide and Sydney organisers under the CouchWarriors umbrella.

CouchWarriors has announced today it is broadening its brand to support esports events in the fighting game and Smash Bros communities of Adelaide and Smash Bros community in Sydney.

The request from these scenes to join the banner comes after a successful expansion into Brisbane last year, which saw events grow to an average of 160 attendees each month, and launch a successful national major, Sunny Side Up, with over 450 attendees.

Alongside, events in CouchWarriors home base in Melbourne also saw a big growth for the FGC. Over 1,500 unique competitors attended the national major, BAM (Battle Arena Melbourne) in May, and players across ANZ are participating in the BAM Path To EVO league, in which CouchWarriors sponsored three players to the largest worldwide tournament, EVO in Las Vegas.

Altogether, the Fighting Game esports scene is strong and healthy.

Now, Adelaide FGC and Smash, and Sydney Smash organisers will be working under the CouchWarriors banner to bring the winning formula to monthly events and add to the nationwide circuit of events.

Regular CouchWarriors events in Adelaide and Sydney will start with:

  • CouchWarriors SA “Cheese League” Monthly Ranking Battle
      • When: 3rd Sunday each month
      • Where: Level 5, Union House, Adelaide Uni
      • Next event: Sunday 17th Nov – Click here to Register

  • CouchWarriors NSW “Star Forge”: Sydney Smash Monthly
    • When: 4th Sunday each month
    • Where: 5 Broadway, Ultimo NSW 2007
    • Next event: Sunday 27th Oct- Click here to Register

Majors for Adelaide and Sydney join the Circuit

  • Phantom 2020: Sydney Smash/Splatoon Major

These events join BAM, Sunny Side Up and the FGC end of year event, CouchWarriors Crossup, which will be on December 14 at Bayview on the Park. Details here.

You can find all the events listed regularly on the CouchWarriors Facebook events page here, and announced on the Couchwarriors website.

Look for announcements on how these events and more fit in to the 2020 season of #BAMPathToEVO www.bampathtoevo.com.au

BAM11 – Results

Another huge weekend has marked the 11th annual Battle Arena Melbourne! BAM11 saw Australia’s biggest fighting game event step into its second decade, and third year at the Melbourne Convention Centre.  The CouchWarriors team, a group of community volunteer organisers is incredibly proud of the event blown away by the response of the community.

Among other achievements, BAM11 had 1,020 unique fighting game competitors! Add to that nearly 500 spectators, PC LAN and Splatoon 2 competitors, and our total attendance by footfall was 4,412! This is by far the biggest open entry esports competition in Australia and New Zealand. Thank you all for another record breaking year!

Of course, the real story of BAM11 every year is the incredible feats in each tournament. With 42 events over 3 days, there were multiple national championships and hundreds of stories of small rivalries to legendary finals including many with international superstars.

We saw the first Mortal Kombat 11 major, the biggest tournament ever for Smash Ultimate and global points on the line in Tekken World Tour and Capcom Pro Tour. In fact, tournament attendances rose across the board. All this, and we crowned ANZ champions in the BAM PATH TO EVO finals for SFV, Tekken and Smash Ultimate, meaning three players are going to EVO World Championships with flight and accom expenses paid.

CouchWarriors Crossup – Results, Photos

Over 500 attendees participated in the inaugural CouchWarriors Crossup esports event, combining our traditional end of year community ranking battle across a wide range of fighting games, and special events. For the first time, we were pleased to host a Saga event for the Dragon Ball FighterZ World Tour with international pro talent, and a surge of new players for Super Smash Bros Ultimate, alongside free events for Splatoon 2 and preview of Dead or Alive 6.

Results

Dragon Ball FighterZ (78 entrants): Japanese Champion Kazunoko takes his 4th Saga event title. Top Australian results – Falco (Adelaide) 9th, Baxter (Brisbane) 13th, Dailo (Sydney) 13th, and MajinBeng (Melbourne) 13th.

The final match was a heartbreaker for 2nd place Tachikawa (JP) who came so close, and the anguish of the loss is evident in the series of shots shown here.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate (154 entrants): Long running Smash 4 champion DS Extra has on of the closest grand finals he’s faced, with Melbourne regular Ignis making his first grand final and pushing hard with a bracket reset and just going down 3-2.

Full results as reported internationally on Shoryuken and detailed on our Smash.gg listing
