COVID-19 Update and Online Tournament Schedule

It has been a tough month or two for any community that relies on live events – our FGC included. Those following our social media accounts will know that the realities of the coronavirus pandemic have forced CouchWarriors to make a number of changes to our 2020 plans, including postponing tournaments or moving them online. To ensure an easy reference for our community over the next few months, we’re collecting those announcements in one place.

A common theme for the ranbat was on display here; a smaller field, likely due to COVID-19 fears, left room for players to register personal best placings. For Benjamin “Destiny74” Jakabfy, this was his first trip to the podium since getting 3rd in September. Julian “Issedia” Petersen broke an even longer drought of his own.

After a massively successful debut last year, the return of Phantom was arguably one of the most anticipated tournaments for 2020. This year the Smash-focused major was again held at the UNSW Roundhouse in Sydney, with tournament brackets running on March 7th and 8th.

Phantom 2020 also had the honour of being the first Major to hand out double-points for the newly-launched CouchWarriors League. Here’s a summary of the results in every game and how the top matches turned out. A complete listing of match results and brackets for each game can be viewed on Smash.gg here.

War of the Weeklies: Sunshine vs. Pixel VIC Crew Battle Report

One of the best parts of any tournament is the sense you’re playing for stakes. Whether it’s prize money, sponsor gear or qualifying points toward the BAM Path to EVO ladder, CouchWarriors events offer plenty of reasons to play hard and chase that trophy. But sometimes, what’s really most important is playing for pride – and for the sweet taste of bragging rights over your rivals. This was the prize on offer last week at the CouchWarriors VIC Smash ranbat, as up-and-comers from the state’s two biggest weekly tournaments clashed in a long-awaited crew battle.

EAST V. WEST: WHO’S THE BEST?

This battle was set to resolve a longstanding rivalry between players from Melbourne’s eastern and western regions. Both regions gained a new weekly tournament around the same time, forming two communities of players who mostly trained against their own members and developed their own hierarchies of players.

I think I have to apologize to Christian “ORDER|ROF” Dedalija for jinxing him last month. No sooner did I boast about his seeming invincibility in SFV than Xavier “DS|Somniac” Nardella rose to the challenge and brought the endboss down. Somniac’s run was even more impressive as he had to recover from a round 2 loss to John “ZEDDD” Le, but the veteran rallied and eventually overwhelmed ROF 6 games to 2 across two grand final sets.

Whatever else can be said about Christian “ORDER|ROF” Dedalija, he at least makes it easy for me doing these recaps – I can just leave his tag at the top of the standings every month. His reign of dominance stretching back to October overshadows a big run from multi-game threat John “ZEDDD” Le to claim another podium finish.

Turns out, he could.
